The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday announced the establishment of a 24×7 Emergency Control Room in the aftermath of a recent terror attack targeting civilian vehicles in the region. The toll-free number—1800-345-3422—has been activated to assist affected families, coordinate medical aid, and provide real-time security updates to residents and visitors.
In a formal notification, the Home Department stated that the control room will serve as a single-point liaison among district administrations, security forces, and hospitals. “This facility is crucial to ensuring swift response and relief for those impacted by acts of terror,” the order read. Officials have staffed the center with trained personnel from the police, civil administration, and health services.
The announcement follows last week’s ambush on a civilian convoy near the Uri sector, which left three passengers injured and several vehicles damaged. While no fatalities were reported, the attack renewed concerns over the safety of commuters on vulnerable routes in the Valley. Security agencies have since intensified area patrols and set up additional checkpoints along key highways.
Local residents and civil society leaders welcomed the initiative but urged seamless coordination. “A dedicated helpline will help families get information about loved ones and arrange immediate medical transfers,” said Meera Devi, a Srinagar-based activist. “We hope it remains fully functional and accessible.”
Meanwhile, the state police have reiterated advice for citizens to report any suspicious movement to the new helpline. “Public vigilance, coupled with swift administrative action, is our best defense against terror threats,” said DIG North Kashmir, R.S. Rana.
Authorities have also launched an awareness campaign through social media, distributing the control room number and safety guidelines in multiple languages. The Home Department confirmed that the service is toll-free and operational across all telecom networks in Jammu and Kashmir.
